Is my SIJ out of place?
What is the SIJ?!
See the area highlighted in green on the pelvis? It's where the sacrum (continuation of your spine) and the ilium bones meet & make up the "sacroiliac joint", SIJ for short!
What does it feel like if it's irritated?!
Most commonly, you'll experience pain at one or both sides of the low back, usually right at the joint space that I highlighted! Sometimes you can also experience sciatica-like symptoms down into your butt/leg as well. There are a few ROOT causes for having sciatic nerve irritation, the SIJ being one of them!
Do I have pain because my SIJ is out of place?!
Research shows your SI moves 0.3 mm, so..no. The pain is NOT a result of damage, but instead hypersensitivity to the area, leading to guarding of the muscles (often times at the low back)-hence why you have felt those SPASMS! Your body was likely trying to make you feel safe and provide stability- and using those muscles to do so.
What do I do next?
Breathe. Let's calm down the nervous system first so you can tolerate addressing the root cause next (remember, this is NOT the same for everyone). You don't have to live with flare ups that ruin your day, week, or month & take you out of commission over and over again!
