Benefit of wearing barefoot shoes
Shoes + foot health
My patients have been asking a lot lately- what shoes are best for me? I love this question because that tells me they are understanding their body as a kinetic chain and the importance of their foot health, even when I'm seeing them for low back pain or pelvic floor concerns. Many of the women I see struggle with bunions, foot pain, can't separate their toes (splaying), or their big toe is sideways! If you have any of those- check out my IG post on the Naboso toe splays!
Transition shoe
Unfortunately, if you have any of those things mentioned above, your foot is not going to love if you hop into a true barefoot style shoe without a transition shoe. Meaning, pick a few features of barefoot shoes, such as a wide toe box and lower arch support and start there until your foot adapts and gets stronger!
3 things to look for:
This question can be answered generally speaking, but remember everyone's foot shape is different. Also, if you have foot pain already see a PT to treat the root cause! But overall, when looking for an everyday closed toe shoe I want it to have 1) WIDE TOE BOX 2) LITTLE (15 DEGREES) TO NO ARCH SUPPORT 3) THIN SOLE.
Comparing the two..
As you can see in the comparison photos, the white shoe is a barefoot style shoe from VIVOBAREFOOT Shoes with a thin sole, little to no arch support, and a natural foot shaped wide toe box! These are a true barefoot style! Comparing to the blue shoe, look how high the sole is and how it slants downwards towards the toe box-that's like wearing high heels! Ever wonder why your calves are always tight? Additionally, our arches should be strong and flexible- did you know you can TRAIN them?!!
